Washington, D.C. Metro – Bertram & Murphy has announced its scholarship opportunity for high school students. The scholarship opportunity is open to high school juniors or seniors who live in Washington D.C., Virginia, or Maryland.

Interested applicants are directed to prepare an entry essay of between 1,000 and 2,000 words on ONE of the following topics;

  • “What can the healthcare industry do to stop medical mistakes from happening?”
  • “How is technology in the medical world changing patient-provider relationships?”
  • “How can our healthcare system better protect the security of patient data from hackers? Furthermore, do HIPAA regulations need updating to reflect these changes?”
  • “Do telemedicine visits have risks associated to patient safety?”
  • “How can technology be used to make healthcare safer?”

Entries are required to be submitted in Word document or PDF format before June 30th, along with a high school transcript (also in PDF format) and a headshot (in .JPG or .PNG file format).

Those vying for the high school scholarship sponsored by Bertram & Murphy stand a chance to win amazing prizes, including a first-place prize of $1,000, a second-place prize of $500, and a third-place prize of $250 on August 1st when the winners are announced.

Describing the general rules of the competition, the firm’s founder, Katie Bertram, noted that by submitting each application and essay, each winning participant agrees to forfeit their right of ownership of the article to Bertram & Murphy in Washington, D.C. to publish, distribute, and promote the essay scholarship as deemed fit. In addition, winning participants agree to have the law firm use their name, biographical information, and photographs for marketing purposes. The winners will be selected by a committee tasked with eliminating plagiarized content while sifting through essay applications for unique and gripping content.

When calling the community to action against medical malpractice, Bertram added, “Do you know someone who has been a victim of medical malpractice? Or do you have an idea about how to prevent these incidents from occurring? If so, Bertram & Murphy wants to hear from you.”

Bertram also noted that medical mistakes happen more frequently than reported and stressed the need to raise awareness on the issue as well as the avenues through which it can be addressed.
