Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll | Bertram & Murphy

November 11, 2020 | In the Community

The Bertram & Murphy is proud to announce that attorney Catherine “Katie” Bertram has recently been included in the Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll. This means Katie has donated at least 50 hours or more of pro bono service for the Washington, D.C., community.

Kaite has always believed in giving back to the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia communities her firm serves. She has consistently demonstrated this commitment by participating in pro bono activities, contributing directly to local charities, and working with others to combine their charitable efforts.

Pro bono publico, or “pro bono” for short, is a Latin term which means “for the public good.” In practice, it means members of the legal profession donate their efforts to perform legal services for people in need, many of whom cannot afford such services.

What Is the Pro Bono Honor Roll?

The American Bar Association introduced the National Celebration of Pro Bono annual awards in 2009 to “showcase the incredible difference that pro bono lawyers make to our nation, to our system of justice, to our communities, and most of all, to the clients they serve.”

The theme of this year’s effort was “Rising to Meet the Challenge: Pro Bono Response to COVID-19.” The coronavirus pandemic severely impacted America’s people, businesses, and communities. Lost income, lost jobs, food shortages, new legal challenges, and deaths steadily increased as the pandemic continued.

The legal profession, through their pro bono efforts, helped to meet the challenge. Together over 390,000 hours of legal counsel were donated nationwide.

What Is Pro Bono Week?

Pro Bono week began as a “nationally coordinated strategy for recognizing pro bono across the country.” This coast-to-coast celebration takes place every October.

Events are planned and carried out to focus on local programs and issues with an emphasis on providing legal access to justice for low-income and vulnerable people, non-profit organizations, and small businesses.

Since 2009, more than 10,000 events have been held with lawyers, paralegals, law students, volunteers, and local communities.

This year’s event in Washington, D.C., took place on October 25-31. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many clinics were conducted as virtual events or webinars. The topics and trainings were timely and relevant to not only the theme of serving communities and families during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to other important issues such as immigration, the environment, small business, health insurance eligibility, homelessness, veterans, and more.
